Used Motorcycle Inspection Guide

 

Purchasing a used motorcycle is a great way to save money, but not every used model has been properly maintained by its previous owners. Before you make your purchase, you should always inspect the vehicles first. That is why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has created this guide to inspecting a used motorcycle. 

 

Outer Appearance

Start your inspection with the exterior. If the front and back wheels are misaligned, this often indicates that the motorcycle has crashed in the past. Dings, dents, and scratches may just seem like aesthetic flaws, but they can give you an idea of how frequently and how hard the bike has fallen in the past. 

 

Maintenance Marks

Next, take a look at the interior components like nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies. If these parts are misaligned, it often indicates that the motorcycle has not been properly maintained. 

 

Other Interior Components

Check the inside of the fuel tank for flaking metal and discolored fuel. Also have a look at the coolant system to make sure nothing is amiss. The air filter and spark plug should also be in good condition. 

 

Mileage Check

While a used motorcycle’s mileage can be a big help in trying to determine how much more it can be ridden before it needs to be retired, there are a few caveats. First, some motorcycle types have a higher maximum mileage than others. Second, proper maintenance can extend a motorcycle’s effective lifespan. A poorly maintained sport bike ready for the scrap heap and a well maintained touring cycle with a few years of riding left in it can have the same mileage.
